A note from Carl Sloan :
Thank you for the honor of being appointed to the USARM Board of Directors. I have three overall objectives : compromise, decentralization, legalization I have three personal goals : membership awards selection, formal training/critiquing of individual performance, prioritizing USARM's legal status. Some members have been interested enough to share their concerns with me in the past. In order to best adhere to a board members' primary responsibility to serve the members, I need input, input and input. It makes no difference whether or not there is agreement. it is incumbent on the membership to direct the Board's actions. Some of my thoughts and concerns can be found at Carl's Corner in the USARM Forum. Confidentiality will be maintained upon request.
The weekend was warm, easy and lots of fun. We had a lean, mean working machine and a true family atmosphere for the entire weekend. There were lots of new folks who blended well with the seasoned vets who were at the event. The real amazing part was seeing out camping area that was full of our workers for the weekend but actually looked quite empty since we had a third of the workers we normally have working the Moto-GP. It made worker transportation easy. We ran one Draggin Wagon (More on that later), no Safety Cars, 2 Doctors and 3 Ambulances. For the first time in over 35 years we had a race with no NMPs (National Motorcycle Patrol who are our on course medical response team). I was truly concerned about running a race with no NMPs but fortunately everything worked out ok. Thank you SO much to everyone who came out to work the final AMA and all our events that weekend! I know they were long, tiring days but you truly showed the team spirit and worked hard to make sure this was a safe race for all concerned!
Here is the notice they sent out on that special day... We probably all remember where we were on September 11, 2001 when the attacks began against our country. It affected us all in so many different ways and often those memories are frightening or sad. This date will now have new positive meaning for the two of us. September 11th will now also be known as the date when Jan and Marty were wed. We had an informal ceremony in our living room overlooking the lake. The exalted Ms. Melanie (Pratt & Miller Corvette Racing Team) officiated and John (Chief of Emergency Services for ALMS) participated in the ceremony helping with the reading of a lovely script they had prepared. We have been chatting recently about moving forward with our relationship and originally wanted to wait until we get to California, but trying to coordinate all that from Florida would be too difficult. We didn't want anything big and fancy for our wedding. It turns out that we had both independently thought about doing something on September 11th so that is the date on our marriage certificate - Today - September 11th, 2008. Effective today, September 11, 2008, we are one: One love, one home, one family united in the memories of the past and the joys of our future together. Our love to you all, Marty and Jan Kaufman
With the final AMA this September came the end of an era that most USARM Members will reflect on with fond memories and a bit of sadness. Dave Bellina, who has been driving our Draggin Wagon for over 20 years has retired from the Draggin Wagon crew. And Mick Brown who has been on the Draggin Wagon crew for over 25 years retired. Dave and his lovely wife, Kathy, came to a USARM race long ago as guests. Almost immediately they both got involved working the races. When Dave took over the Draggin Wagon crew he created a well-run, fun, and very effective team that expanded from one truck to two. His Draggin Wagon model has been copied across the country. The Laguna Seca team has been highlighted in magazines and on TV throughout the years primarily due to their focus on Safety, their integrity and the confidence his team instills with the riders that the bike will get back to the paddock as quickly and safely as possible.. Dave's in-depth knowledge and experience of motorcycle racing enhanced his activities. Many of the riders recognized Dave from his own motorcycle racing in years back - often to his dismay! LOL. Dave has often been consulted on matters of track-safety, logistics and safety due to his track knowledge and his focus on rider safety. Dave's relationship with AMA, prior to his working with USARM, worked well to establish the well-oiled relationship they have enjoyed for the last two decades and I anticipate that relationship will continue with the new regime. Mick Brown was on the Draggin Wagon crew for several years before Dave came on board. Mick has been a staple at Laguna for such a long time that he can basically come and go as he pleases. Mick also has an in-depth knowledge of motorcycle racing and has been quite an asset to the entire Draggin Wagon team especially with the "guys on the back of the truck". While Dave drives Mick is working and training new folks who join the Draggin Wagon crew. Again his focus on Safety has proven to be an incredible asset to the riders as well as the entire crew. So it's the end of an era but not the end of the fun. Dave and Mick will be back with us in other capacities next year. Dave and Mick are two of USARMs' most valued assets. Their actions over the years have truly enhanced our relationship with SCRAMP, AMA, DORNA and FIM. Nothing we can do could ever truly express the thanks they deserve for all they have done so I will simply say… on behalf of USARM - Thank you Dave! Thank you Mick! And… see you both soon! USARM By-Laws are being updated The USARM Board is actively engaged in updating our by-laws and our corporate status. Please take a moment to review the by-laws in our website and send the directors any ideas, recommendations, etc. that you would like to see incorporated into our by-laws.
2009 is a Milestone year for USARM Our club began in 1959 to provide safety for car races. The club focused on training corner workers, establishing consistent procedures for flagging, communications and response to disabled racing vehicles. The growth of USARM club with the variety of racing events we work and the global membership we enjoy continues to enhance our activities. We learn from each other. We work hard, play harder and our focus on providing a professional work force and maintain a family atmosphere is a model for other clubs.
