To all USARM members,
Thank you. That was my reaction on Saturday night and it's still conveys my feelings this morning. My deer in the headlights look then is still the same today. There are many deserving members and this award could not be possible without my fellow USARM track workers that show up to work our events. It's my honor to work with such a dedicated group of workers.
|
This award has a deeper meaning for me, as Martin Ilgen was my first flag chief and one of the people who taught me the proper way of flagging. In addition, on my SCCA side, I'm the chairman of the San Francisco Region Hall of Fame Committee and Martin Ilgen is one of ten inductees in the first class of the Hall of Fame.

CHECKER ON LAP 76
It's been a long haul from Aspen to Laguna Seca;
Twenty-five seasons span my first and latest event.
And it's a far cry between Road America and Hutchison.
One's elegant broadways and the other's weedy runways.
At Elkhart's June Sprints, lunch was always bratwursts
And blue flagging was the chief religious ritual
Whereas in Kansan we often had more workers than cars
And had to watch out for Amish buggies on the road.
Across that time and space a quilt of memories spreads
Mornings at the track, mists slowly dissolving into sunrise
Silence in the rigs and tents, as if they were deserted
Until coffee fragrance wafted, the first engine barked.
I saw Li'l Al start out at age 18 in a Formula Ford at Hutch
And Mario make h is Last Hurrah through the Andrettis Hairpin
I was on Turn Four at the Dallas Grand Prix, when Nigel
Pushed his Lotus until collapsing in 114 degree heat.
My hatful of pins, board of plaques, patches on whites
Mean standing all day in the rain at East Saint Louis
Sleeping overnight on the tarmac at La Junta, Colorado
Digging a car out of the tires at Ponca City during a race
Clinging to a Cliffside for the Virginia City Hillclimb
Being alone on the Corkscrew as Champ Cars came through.
My zeal has been flagging…and communicating as well
Now my reflexes flag and I can't cope with corners forever
God runs a fleet of divine Fiats to carry out hi will
And I've already had a couple of brushes with them.
So rather than be DQ'd, I've chosen to retire
On my wall hangs a checkered flag, gift from a DSR driver
It's time to take it down and throw it, to bring this
Old Cornerhusker into the paddock on his 76th lap of life.
I've been part of many crews: Kansas City Leaping Lizards
Colorado Sidewinders, San Francisco SCCA, and USARM's gang.
These groups have taught alertness, teamwork, dedication
Thanks to all of you who mentored and put up with me.
So let an organ of exhaust pipes sound the praise for
The glorious company of Historic Motorsports and MotoGP
The goodly fellowship of all club members and backers
And the noble leagues of CART, IRL, ALM, Grand AM and FIA
Let all those present say Amen!
Jud van Gorder - 2006

Banquet Review
Steve Johnson provided a very highly detailed statement of the revenues and expenses from the Banquet. Kati presented Steve Johnson with invoices from organizations that donated to the raffle, but did not want reimbursement. The raffle generated $567.00. The BOD decided that in keeping with past practice they are going to round and double the amount to $1200.00 It was also decided that non-profit groups that the raffle monies get donated to would alternate from the North to the South. This year it was decided that the donation would be going to the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Make-A-Wish Foundation that has an event at Laguna Seca in August. |

Training Review
Jan provided a review of the training course. There was very low turn-out for the training sessions. It was also determined that there had been some miscommunication as to who was doing what. Jerry Huff stated that we should look into getting line to attach the pins to the fire bottles in order to not lose the pins when they are pulled. Dave Jansen will be contacting Advance Fire and Rescue regarding the invoice that they provided. Jan brought up the idea and will be doing research on training and how to get more members updated training. The BOD decided to make this item an agenda item for the next BOD meeting and all of the BOD was tasked to brainstorm ideas for training.

USARM and POC in Las Vegas!
The first POC event for USARM and POC was done in Las Vegas, February 10-12. What a treat to have USARM at this wonderful track!
POC provided us with a great week end of fast cars, great food, lots of casino action and unmatched camaraderie. Jim Hileman did a great job in the 'starter' stand & Steve Knisley, on grid was terrific.
A SPECIAL "THANKS" to Phil Guerrero for all his help in delivering lunches, batteries and whatever else was needed on track. Thanks to all who came to Las Vegas to "play". |
With more POC events upcoming, please plan to attend at least one of them.

For those of our members who travel and camp at Laguna Seca for USARM events, two (2) designated camping areas have been established with Monterey County Parks Dept & Laguna Seca.
If you plan to work a USARM event in the future, you may use one of these camping areas free of charge. The 2 campsite numbers are 107 and 108. For the winter months, USARM camping can be arranged behind the turn 11 grandstands, as the Park campground area is closed
It is on a first come first serve basis but if there are more than 2 USARM members who are camping, arrangements can be made to ensure camping for the events that you are working.
Please contact the person in charge of the USARM event to make sure you have your camping spot.
Ted & Jan are forming their committee. If you are interested in being apart of the MotoGP committee, please contact either Ted or Jan:
