| HAPPY THANKSGIVING USARM |
November 2005 |
Candidate Statement for Jim Hileman
Hi everyone,
For those of you who don't know me I'd like to introduce myself and give you some background information about me. I have worked off track as a retail manager, responsible for scheduling, finance, and personnel. I have also worked for the county of Shasta, Office of the Sheriff.
|
 |
On track, I first picked up a flag in 1989 at Willows. Since that time I have worked as a turn marshal, communicator, grid, re entry, and a starter for various organizations and tracks.
I have worked on track at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway, Infineon Raceway, Thunderhill, Buttonwillow, Willows and Reno-Fernley Raceway. I have worked for USARM, SCCA, SCRAMP, NASA, Thunderhill and Reno-Fernley Raceway. This year I have worked 161 days at a racetrack and noted the many positive improvements within USARM.
Working that many days this year has given me a good insight as what it takes to put on a race and staff a race and as a Director for USARM I would put that knowledge to use, as there is always room for improvement and new and better ways to accomplish a goal, in keeping with our recent improvements.
As a Director for USARM I will be fair to all. I will welcome any and all input from members of USARM and listen to their thoughts, feelings and ideas. I will be available to any member of USARM any time by phone, e-mail or snail mail. I will perform my duties as a Director to the best of my ability and with the best interest of all USARM members.
A vote for me is a vote for the continuing the bright future and betterment of USARM.
Thank you
Jim Hileman |
Candidate Statement for Shelley Ulry
Hi!
I'm Shelley Ulry and I would like to introduce myself to those who don't already know me. I live in Pacific Grove, CA and have been with USARM for the last 3 years. I've loved every minute of it. I have worked many events at different turns, positions, and tracks such as: World Superbikes, Cherry's Jubilee, MotoGP, Make A Wish (Porsche Club), HMSA events, Shelby Club, NASA, Coronado, Track Masters, and Skip Barber Racing School to name a few. When I was awarded the Jim Thurston Communicator of the year in 2004 it was a very special moment for me, with the recognition of my fellow workers being the most important kudos possible.
|
 |
I come to "work" (and have fun) with enthusiasm and energy and have learned so much from all of the USARM members, and noted with enthusiasm the forward movement our Club has experienced in the past year. I want to assist in that user friendly and open movement and am always thinking of new and fresh ideas to make us even more professional and enjoyable.
I am now asking for your vote to be a member of the USARM Board Of Directors and continue our positive direction.
Thank you
Shelley Ulry |
Candidate Statement for Kati James
It has been my pleasure to serve on the USARM BoD for the past 2 years. There have been some exciting changes in USARM and more to come!
Many of you know me & I have the privilege of meeting and working with a great many of you.

As USARM begins another year full of promising events, new challenges, some new faces and the eagerness to make USARM even better, lets not forget what we have accomplished in the year past.
MotoGp 2005 drew a huge number of new members and welcomed back returning members from 14 states, including Canada & England to Laguna Seca for the best motorcycle racing in the United States.
USARM supported events such as Green Flag, Russell Racing School, Skip Barber Racing School, Shelby Club, HMSA, General Racing LLD, Ferrari Club, NCRC/ARC, with tracks at Buttonwillow, Infineon Raceway, Thunder Hill Raceway, Laguna Seca Raceway, and Reno-Fernley Raceway.
The members of USARM are better informed, better trained and more professional with the training seminars being offered. Lets support them again in February!
USARM has been able to support Camp Okizu with more scholarships for its' camp, thanks to the generosity of the members who bought raffle tickets at the annual banquet in February.
It has been a wonderful experience for me to see the changes and be a part of watching & helping USARM grow and establish itself with the racing community to the extent it has and with the hope of more to come.
I am running for re-election to the 2006 USARM BoD and would appreciate the support that you have shown me in the past years.
Thanks & see ya'll at the track

Candidate Statement for Steve Johnson
As a current member of the USARM Board of Directors, I have decided the best way for me to continue the progressive changes our club has made over the last year, is to continue to work on your BoD. So I am seeking an elected term to continue serving the membership as previously I was appointed and gladly filled a position this last year due to a resignation on the BoD.

I believe in a strong organization that supports the many and varied events that USARM is involved with each season. I have worked MotoGP, Skip Barber Race Schools, HMSA & General Racing LLD, all this year, for USARM. I have worked the start stand for the Skip Barber weekends and on the corners with members like you, for other events. I am not afraid of being cold, wet, tired, dusty or hot. I truly believe that the USARM BoD must be in contact with the members and be involved.
I have been and am again, the USARM Banquet Chairman and have been extremely involved with providing USARM a terrific, fun evening to gather with friends. Along these lines, this last year was one of the highest attended banquets in recent memory, with the promise of an even bigger banquet in the upcoming year.
I believe that USARM must move forward and actively seek out those clubs who deserve the most professional, trained, course marshals available-USARM members! The USARM organization has made great strides in the last year in moving a head with providing the best that we have to offer at many tracks, including Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow, Thunder Hill, Reno-Fernley & Infineon Raceway.
Please allow me the privilege to continue to serve you, the members of USARM at the many events we support and help provide you with the best leadership I can give you.
Best regards
Steve Johnson |
Candidate Statement for Mick Housel
I have decided to ask you, the members, to allow me to be on the USARM Board of Directors again. It's been a few years since I last served and would like to once again help our club move forward. For those that don't know me, I've been a member for over 15 years and have always enjoyed being part of this corner working "family".

I'd like to help USARM to continue to grow and be a stable and fun organization. There are new tracks such as Reno-Fernley Raceway which I'm sure will soon be hosting car club events, etc. which we will be asked to staff. These events will be in addition to the events that we staff at Infineon, Laguna, Thunderhill and Buttonwillow as well as the special events like Coronado.
Of course, there is our "major" event of the year at Laguna Seca with the MotoGP race. This event allows us to bring in folks from all over the US and the world to help us make sure this event runs smoothly. We get a chance to showcase our talents in running a safe event in a professional manner. I have helped in the background for a number of years to help get ready for the MotoGP and WSB events.
I work with Ted Kuwada to ensure that the membership database is kept updated and correct. I also have the responsibility of maintaining the USARM website. I'm currently in the process of updating/redesigning the website and hope to be able to have the new design up and running in the very near future.
There are some important times ahead for USARM. Some tracks are pushing clubs, etc. to use their corner workers instead of using USARM for their club events. It's important that USARM meets with both the tracks and club representatives to make sure that the club events are properly staffed. As always, change is inevitable and USARM must make sure that we are involved with the changes and that we can move forward as a viable club that promotes and provides track safety in a professional manner.
Thanks for your time and consideration.

Candidate Statement for Jan Weaver
I would like to run for the USARM Board once again. Many of you know me already due to my previous activities on the USARM Board. I originally joined USARM in 1971. I served on the Board of Directors from 1977 until 2004. I did not run last year so I could devote my time to a family member who was quite ill. That situation is behind me now and I'd like to rejoin the Board.
|
 |
For those of you who don't know me here is a "racing history". I became a pit crew member in 1970 on a Datsun 2000. I joined the Communications crew which at that time was managed by USARM. In 1973 SCCA took over licensing of all workers and USARM almost ceased to exist. Although I was a communicator for 22 years with SCCA I also I continued a high level of activity with USARM. I then established the Worker Transportation Crew at Laguna Seca and also worked as part of my son's pit crew. Most of my racing activities has been with USARM though. Throughout the years with USARM I have worked with CSRG, Shelby Club, Green Flag and many other clubs as well as the motorcycle races for over 25 years. I've worked Sears Point, Laguna Seca, Las Vegas, Thunder Hill and Button Willow at our club races. For the last many years I've been doing the Medical Dispatch and Race Control for all our motorcycle races at Laguna Seca with a wonderful team of talented people who make my job so much fun.
I'd like to rejoin the Board to help continue the success we have had with our club. The current board had done a great job and I'd like to work with them to continue the progress made. I'd like to assist with our working relationships with our clubs, ongoing training, and setting up procedures and processes that will ensure we have clear documentation on the roles and responsibilities of each member.
Please cast your vote to add Jan Weaver back on to the USARM Board!
Thanks so much,
Jan |
For those of our members who travel and camp at Laguna Seca for USARM events, two (2) designated camping areas have been established with Monterey County Parks Dept & Laguna Seca.
If you plan to work a USARM event in the future, you may use one of these camping areas free of charge. The 2 campsite numbers are 107 and 108.
It is on a first come first serve basis but if there are more than 2 USARM members who are camping, arrangements can be made to ensure camping for the events that you are working.
Please contact the person in charge of the USARM event to make sure you have your camping spot.
The USARM Board of Directors postponed the October meeting; hence there are no BoD minutes in this issue of The Grid.
The USARM BoD, in lieu of formal minutes, has taken these actions.
1. An official email BoD vote was taken to confirm Ted Kuwada & Jan Weaver to chair the MotoGP 2006. Both Ted & Jan have been notified and are eager to begin forming the MotoGP 2006 committee.
2. Flag bags have been received for the equipment at Infineon Raceway and will be in use soon.
3. Steve Johnson is continuing to work on the menu selections for the annual USARM Banquet in February.
4. A full financial statement will be included in the next Grid.
The USARM Board of Directors would like to congratulate and thank Ted Kuwada & Jan Weaver for stepping up and volunteering to head MotoGp 2006!
Ted & Jan will be forming their committee very soon and welcome the input of the USARM membership.
