WORKER LIASION
Making USARM work better for you!

What does that mean to you? Well USARM, in trying to meet the needs of its members have 'appointed' a new worker liaison to better serve YOU! Ok, you guessed it-it's me, Kati James. Many of you already know me & have survived the experience.

I want your suggestions, comments, complaints and anything else that you want to say to your BoD. I will present your ideas and any of the above at the monthly board meetings & will make sure that you have an answer. This may come in the next Grid or you may get a direct answer from one of the BoD members. Either way, the communications will improve & you will be more involved with YOUR club.

All I ask is that you give me your thoughts in writing, as I am a visual learner & need to see it on paper (or in email) so that I can make my list for the next meeting.

There are a lot of exciting things coming our way in the next few months & your BoD wants to make sure that you have a chance to have your ideas, thoughts, concerns and all the rest, heard. So here I am, let me know & you have my promise that you will not be left standing out there alone, wondering what happened to that great thought that you had.

Let me hear from you.....
Kati James

"Lists"
Lists!

In the past, lists for upcoming events have been used by the BoD to assure that coverage for events was the best! These lists are used to match the number of course marshals to the number requested by the event organizer.

Asking to have your name or putting your name on these lists DOES NOT mean that you are assured of working that event. The Marshall selection is done by the BoD member or committee member controlling that event. In most cases this includes everyone on the list but at times there are more names submitted than are needed and some may not be selected to work that event. This DOES NOT mean that you won't work other upcoming events!

Please understand it isn't personal if you aren't selected to work a particular event. Every effort will be made to accommodate everyone.

The GRID is YOUR publication.
It can't function without you,
the USARM Member!

If you have an article, a news worthy item, a story, a race report, a joke or just about anything that might be of interest to the membership, please send it via email, snail mail or simply hand it to a board member.

In Memory of Steve Mahan

It is always sad when one of USARM's own is no longer with us. Steve Mahan, a long time USARM Course Marshal, passed away on May 14th. No greater tribute can be given to someone than praise by an admirer.

Scott Berri sent these thoughts :

Steve's passing is very saddening news. He was a great person. Nobody ever had a bad thing to say about him. When I first joined USARM years ago as a snot nosed kid, my dad kept me on his turn for most of the first season. When I was "ready", he had me work with Steve. "He's a great guy, and one of our best TMs", Dad said. "Pay attention and do exactly what he says". I was a nervous wreck that morning. Happily, that feeling changed quickly. Steve was one of those rare people that just knew how to make others feel comfortable. When it came to racing info, I think he co-authored "The Book". I couldn't have hoped for a better track-side mentor. I wish I had told him that.

It's hard to believe he won't be riding up on his R1 each morning at SBK this year . . . .

Webmaster Note : Please feel free to post stories and memories of Steve, or anyone else we've lost, in the forums under the In Memory Of topic.

What do I need to bring with me?
As many new people join USARM, this is a question that has been asked many times. We all have our "special" comfort items that we bring with us to work a corner. It may be a chair to use, snacks to nibble on during the day, water, or an umbrella.

But let's start at the beginning:

  1. Wear White

a.
This may sound like a broken record but Course Marshals as associated with this color & are easily identified wearing it.

i.
Wearing another color like blue, red, yellow or black, may confuse a rider or driver when they get a glimpse of you. Remember, they are looking for FLAGS. Do you look like one?

  2. Bring a whistle on a breakaway lanyard
Whistle
a.
This is a lanyard that has some sort of fasteners that allows it to come apart with strain
b.
Using a whistle may be your only way of getting the attention of another Marshal on your corner or even farther away

  3. Sunscreen & and a hat
Sunscreen
Hat
a.
No matter if it is bright sun, overcast or really cloudy, you may get burned and badly! Always bring your sunscreen and a hat to wear while you are on course

4. Any medications that you MUST take during the day. We don't want to have to worry that you are neglecting your health.

  5. WATER! - WATER! - WATER!
Water!
a.

Again, this may seem simplistic but we work outdoors in some very different weather conditions. In hot or warm weather, dehydration can take place very fast. Even in the cool, wet, windy weather, it is very important to keep hydrated. Soda will give you that extra jolt of sugar energy but won't replace the fluid that your body needs. Don't count on someone else bringing enough for everyone.

Note : Water is provided for the workers at the AMA/WSB event. All other events depending on the club/event. If in doubt, bring water. It's better to have it and not need than to need it and not have it.

  6. Paper & a writing instrument
Paper and Pencil
a.
Please bring something to write with and to write on. You will find this valuable in keeping track special instructions about passing zones, session times, any car or bikes of interest, remembering what has been called as first / last off grid or start/finish, maybe even what the lunch menu is going to be.

There is probably a lot more that you can think of but this is a start!

Most important is to take your job seriously,
have fun and take care of yourself and your corner.

USARM Patch and Lapel Pin
PINS & PATCHES

It is the hope of your BoD to be able to have available USARM patches (3 inch size) and a smaller version of the logo in the form of a pin (lapel pin, 7/8 in round and full colored. These will be given out at registration for WSK to all paid, current Course Marshals, with a confirmation letter, working this special event.

Be sure that you CONFIRM your dues are paid!

Additional pins and patches will also be available for purchase at $5.00 per item to send to friends who couldn't make this GREAT upcoming event!

Please remember, this is your publication. It will not be published unless you want to contribute to it. The Grid staff needs your input to make this a newsletter that will be informative, interesting & maybe even FUN!

So send in anything you have of interest to:
Kati James - kati@razzolink.com or in writing, in person anytime you see her. Articles can also be submitted to the PO Box but it may take a bit longer to get them into the Grid.

Suggestions are cheerfully accepted!

Encourage new members
everyday - everywhere!!

If you know someone who is a USARM Member & not getting The Grid,
please let one of the BoD members know & they will be added to the roster.
