What's Been Going On

USARM would like to extend it sympathies and condolences to those that were effected by the tragic events at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Many of you have probably wondered what you can do to help. In his speech to Congress and the nation and world President Bush spoke of a new website LibertyUnites.org, American Liberty Partnership. There's links for donating to numerous organizations such as the Red Cross and others. If you can't donate there's a listing of many other things that you can do to help.

One of the best things that you can do is to donate blood or funds to the Red Cross. The Red Cross hotline for blood donations is (800) GIVE LIFE. The agency has asked people willing to donate blood first to call and schedule an appointment. You can go to this website, www.redcross.org/donate/give/, enter your zip code and it will let you know where your local chapter of the Red Cross is located.

To donate money to Red Cross relief efforts call (800) HELP NOW. The Red Cross also accepts donations online, go to www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html

On Saturday 9/15 (4 days after the terrorist attack), I sang the national anthem at the Sacramento Mile, held at Cal Expo's race track in (duh) Sacramento.

As this was the only pro sporting event in the state that day (maybe in the country!), it was pretty well attended, and Tom and I saw at least half a dozen (current and/or former) USARM'ers there. The Baucoms were working Turn 4, Mike Crawford found us while searching for earplugs, and I KNOW I heard someone yell "Hey MORGAN" while we were standing near Start/Finish waiting for the opening ceremonies to begin (but still don't know who that was ...).

Anyway, my anthem went well (I didn't get choked up!) and the crowd was appropriately reverent and patriotic. I just love the motorcycle crowd!

We also received the following letter from the Racesafe UK Motorycle Marshals Association:

As one of your counterpart organisations in the United Kingdom, Racesafe marshals association would like to pass on its sympathy to all your members, with regard to the recent ghastly events in the United States.

As a volunteer emergency services organisation we feel, as you must too, a particular revulsion that so many members of the emergency services, whose concern was for those who had already been injured or killed, were added to the long list of victims.

We can do little here except pass on our sympathy and support, which you have entirely. I hope you will pass this message on to your members.

David Hawley, Webmaster

Racesafe UK Motorcycle Marshals Association

Thanks to Racesafe for their message of sympathy and solidarity.

Shelby Mini-Nats

Held September 1-2 at Sears Point. The weather was very pleasant, which led to a very uneventful, incident free weekend. The event was held on the short track, and it was a challenge to keep spectators from getting too close to the track with most of the fencing down in the paddock area.

During the morning Drivers' Meeting, USARM workers were recognized and thanked with a round of applause.

Green Flag Driving

Held September 14-15 at Thunderhill. The weekend was used for cross-training -- workers were encouraged to work a new turn or position. On Saturday the workers were requested to attend the Drivers' Meeting. Tom read a letter from Scott and Cindy Griffith regarding a worker who was on one of the highjacked flights. A moment of silence was observed by all.

The weather was very nice, not as warm as we all expected, and resulted in a good turn out of vehicles. The only incident that was memorable, was a car that broke the tow rope.

All workers were invited to the dinner at Franco's, and for those that attended, a good time was had by all. Tom and Kenny really enjoy these events and it shows with the awards that were given to the drivers:

  • Farmer John (most agricultural driving) -- a little rake

  • Turkey (driver who caused the most grief) -- a stuffed turkey

  • Most Patriotic (vehicle that displayed the USA colors proudly) -- a T-shirt with the USA flag

  • Smoker (enough said) -- a bottle of no smoke

  • Most Anemic (lack of horsepower) -- a bottle of octane booster

  • Most Vintage (vehicle Tom would most like to drive) -- toy dinosaur

Please thank all of USARM for a fun packed weekend.

HMSA Fall Finale

Held September 22 23 at Laguna Seca. Advanced Fire and Safety set up a booth and were collecting for the firemen that lost their lives on September 11th. I know of several workers who donated their entire pay for the weekend.

On Sunday, while waiting for the morning meeting, someone noticed that Steve's right rear tire was low on the truck. It was quite remarkable, standing back and watching as many of us helped to change the tire. Pictures were taken of the event, which we gladly labeled, "How many USARM members does it take to change a tire?"
